Happy New Year
A
Happy New Year to you all. No, I haven’t got the wrong month because
for many September marks the beginning of a new year as school starts
again after the summer break. I hope all the children and young people
from the village have a happy new school year particularly those at
school for the first time or those going to a new school. But, it isn’t
only the young who are starting a new year, many activities closed down
over the summer months and from Evening classes to Keep Fit they start
afresh in September. Although the Church’s new year officially starts
in Advent at the end of November, September also brings lots of
activities with the Historic Churches Bike ride on the 11th
Harvest Thanksgiving services on 19th Harvest Supper on 25th and
‘Back to Church’ Sunday on 26th. (details of these elsewhere)
But
not everyone is excited that September has come. For some people
particularly and all of us to some extent, September seems less like a
new year but an ending. September marks the end of summer with only the
winter ahead, time to put away the garden chairs and tidy up the flower
beds, Time when the nights draw in and it begins to get chilly.
If you feel like this about September, remember that this is the time
to plant bulbs. Planting bulbs is a sign of hope, a parable of death
and resurrection as the bulbs lie hidden for many months under the
soil, dead leaves and even snow, yet appear in the spring as welcome
signs of new life. The message the church proclaims is of new life
through faith in Jesus and the possibility of a fresh start whatever
the time of year.
Happy New Year
