Dorchester Deanery Children's Group - Meeting Minutes

Minutes of meeting held on Thursday, 4th March, 2004
at ‘Allen’s’, 8, Augustan Close, Dorchester

Present: Allen Knott (Chairperson), Richard Cox, Wendy Fobister, Sarah Godfrey, Phyllis Brown, Chris Brown, Lydia Hampshire, Lauretta Kerridge

Welcome: Allen welcomed everyone and opened the meeting with prayer. Introductions were made and particular greetings extended to Richard, Wendy and Sarah for who this was their first taster of the group.

Apologies: These had been received from Philip Lambert, Jane Pryce, Jill Vines.

Correspondence:
 Thanks had been received from Philip Lambert, on behalf of the Parish of Dorchester, for the donation given from the proceeds of Carols on the Green.
 Thanks had been received from Anne Comben of St. John Ambulance for the donation given from the proceeds of Carols on the Green.

Minutes of the last meeting: It was proposed by Lydia and seconded by Chris that these were a correct record.

Finance:
Sales of Allen’s poetry book ‘And Another Thing!’ have been extremely successful and Chris reported that there is now £962.32 in the account.

And Another Thing!’ Book Sales: The Secretary has a record of how many poetry books are currently being sold around the Deanery. Since several individuals had requested copies by post, detailing which church they would like to support, the question arose as to how money would be forwarded to these parishes. It was suggested Lauretta contact the Incumbent.

Future events:
 Deanery Picnic: Following the success of the afternoon held at Sunninghill Preparatory School in September 2003, it was felt that a similar Deanery event could take place this year. A suggested date was Sunday, 11th July. It was agreed that, if available on that date, Sunninghill would again make an ideal venue. The timings could be the same as previously, 3 – 4.30 p.m. incorporating an afternoon of fun activities and climaxing in an act of worship. Lydia would contact Steve Kinnersley to see if he would be able to help with the music for the service. Allen would make enquiries as to the need for insurance for the event.
 ‘Carols on the Green’: It was agreed that this is now becoming something of a Christmas tradition! A Friday evening between 6 and 7 p.m. was felt to work well and 10th December was a suggested date. Allen would check the availability of St. George’s Church and ascertain if Loyal Order of Moose could sell hot soup. Lauretta would make a booking with Durnovaria Silver Band and St. John Ambulance.

Workshop Day’: Since ‘Bish & Chips’ had been such a great success, it was agreed that a similar large scale event could take place within the Deanery. In order to have sufficient time to plan, it was decided to aim for Spring 2005. Sarah suggested the possibility of a Pentecost event to take place on the Saturday of the Whitsun weekend. Everyone agreed that this would be the ideal time. Martinstown was proposed as a suitable location as the village had various venues which could be used including the church and village hall. There would also be ample parking in front of the church. Suggestions to make this into a really fun kids event included holding a barbeque and having an icecream van in attendance. Safety was considered; St. John Ambulance would be approached and again, insurance was an issue. Before any further planning could take place, the date of Pentecost weekend 2005 would need to be clarified and Martinstown’s vicar, Revd. Rosemary Bassett contacted.

A.O.B.:
 Lydia runs a Hand Bell Ringers group for children. New members are always welcome; contact her for more details.
 Allen thanked everyone for their time and Richard, Wendy and Sarah for their contribution to the meeting.
 Phyllis noted how much Allen has done for the group and in turn for children’s work within the deanery.

Date of next meeting:
Thursday, 22nd April, 2004 at ‘Allen’s’, 8, Augustan Close, Dorchester at 7.30 p.m.
