was published in November 1859.  On Saturday 14th November 2009, to mark the 150th anniversary of this important event, in a collaboration between Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society and the Parish of Dorchester, there will be an opportunity to explore 

  • the modern understanding of evolution by natural selection, 
  • what it means for the Christian doctrine of creation, and 
  • its significance for human self-understanding.

10.30Evolution and the biological sciences since Darwin:  Denis Alexander (Director of the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, St Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge).
11.30Theological response to The Origin of Species: Keith Ward (Anglican priest,  Professor of Divinity Emeritus at the University of Oxford and Fellow of the British Academy).
12.30Break for lunch; light refreshments may be obtained at a number of cafes close to the Museum.
13.45Geology since Darwin: Simon Conway Morris (Professor of Evolutionary Palaeobiology at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of the Royal Society).
